Selena lugged a suitcase filled with clothes, shoes, and a few books to Lisa’s car. She opened the trunk, strained, and lifted the luggage.

Packing was done faster than she would have liked and more haphazard than normal but once they got to Oregon she’d figure out what was needed.

A police siren sounded in the distance and she froze until the shrill whistle faded. She closed the trunk and hurried back inside. Lisa was sitting up with her hands still tied and her chin on her chest. Exhaustion was getting the best of her.

“Almost ready.” Selena stopped. “Oh, did I pack enough socks?” She furrowed a brow. “No need to worry now.” Getting the food off the table and into her portable cooler was the priority. “We’ll take a bottle of wine. Would you prefer red or white, Lisa? I’m not sure that we have room for both.”

Lisa groaned. The absolute absurdity of the question was too much to take in. It was like asking, “Do you prefer red or white wine before I kill you?”
